KONGKAST #97 – Exclusive mash-up mix feat. Kid Fresh (3x ITF Champ, Lordz of Fitness, Pimpin’ Aint Easy/ GER, HK)

With the KONGKAST #97 Special we bring you a mash-up style mix from one of the most prolific deejays in the scratch and turntablism scene – KID FRESH.

No stranger to big stages and pumped-up crowds, German DJ Kid Fresh of the uberrespected Lordz Of Fitness crew, is proud holder of 3 World ITF DJ champion titles and 5 national DMC/ITF titles. Now based in Hong Kong, Kid Fresh has been making waves in the club land alongside DJ Enso with their enormously popular “Pimpin’ Aint Easy” and “Hype Nasty” club nights.

Since Kid Fresh wow-ed us with a Drum & Bass/ Mash up set as a surprise guest at last year’s Kongkretebass’ JungleBells 2008, we have been looking forward to featuring him in a KONGKAST special. Here you go – a journey from jungle and dnb to dubstep for y’all – Kid Fresh stylin’!

A few words by the man himself, track list and d/l link below…

Many thanks to Kid Fresh for laying down his skillz for Kongkretebass.com.

Note from Kid Fresh:

“Since I spun a lil’ Drum & Bass set for one of the nights hosted by the highly respected Hong Kong based D&B collective KONGKRETEBASS earlier this year, surprising the one or the other with my love for broken beats, I was asked to contribute a mix for their podcast.

An unconventional challenge, since I wouldn’t really consider D&B my realm. I grew up mostly on rap and rock music, and my club sets nowadays are settled somewhere between hi-energy electro and house, stirred up with a bit of an “anything goes” mentality. However, growing up in Germany, I always had half an ear out for the UK rave scene since the early 90s.

It was impossible for me to fill 60 minutes with strictly D&B only. So I decided to hop into the time machine, turn on my flux capacitor, and dig out some of the heavily MDMA soaked early rave kitsch & ganja-impregnated junglist roots of D&B first.

After continuing with some of my personal D&B favs, I ended up mostly rummaging around in the dubstep drawer, which I personally see as one of the lovely bastard child outcomes of D&B and hip hop heavily hitting skins. Enjoy!

ps> Don’t be fooled by the 1st track. I know it’s completely out of sense. But it’s fresh as fuck, so I had to open with it.”

About Kid Fresh:

It would be a gross understatement to reduce Kid Fresh to just a World class deckwrecker par excellence. This Hong Kong-based, Balkan-blooded German kid is already a living legend in the turntablism circuit, holder of 3 World ITF DJ champion titles and 5 national DMC/ITF titles, and was the founder and mastermind behind one of the planet’s most successful turntablist crews, LORDZ OF FITNESS. He is also a passionate globetrotter, multi lingual journalist, booker and co-promoter/founder of Hong Kong’s #1 indie club night PIMPIN’ AINT EASY.

Kid Fresh has appeared on countless international DVDs, press and TV/radio channels, lo-fi bootleg remixed M.I.A., Busta Rhymes, The White Stripes and Lil’ Mama, and released critically acclaimed mixtapes such as for the Swedish music blog Discobelle’s famous Mixin’ It Up series alongside the likes of Crookers and Tittsworth. This has brought him a decent amount of blog buzz and has taken him and his unique style of DJing all around the globe, dropping jaws from Berlin to London, Paris to New York City, Bangkok to Singapore and Seoul to Jakarta, sharing decks and clubnights with the likes of Q-bert, Craze, A-Trak, Roni Size and Carl Cox in world-renowned superclubs like Fabric (London), Watergate (Berlin), Zouk (Singapore) and Circle (Seoul). He has also been DJing at corporate events for brands such as MTV, TECHNICS, SONY and MOTOROLA. The list goes on and on.

Growing up in a family of professional musicians, being a violinist in elementary school, a drum soloist before reaching puberty and the leadsinger of a punkrock band as a teenager, there is no questioning his knowledge, experience and deep roots in all aspects of music culture.

His musical style is eclectic and versatile, fusing hip hop with house, electro with rock, dancehall reggae with breakbeats and far beyond, covering the best of all worlds of urban dance music while being able to read any type of crowd with ease.

Combined with the technical finesse and abilties of a 3 time World champion DJ, his signature style on the decks remains untouched by most of today’s A-list Club DJs.
