More info about SLEEPER:

Sleeper’s consistently tough beats, versatility across multiple sounds and no-nonsense soundsystem battering selections have helped cement his reputation as a perennially heavyweight producer and DJ,  delivering proper UK underground music centred around unabashed low-frequency pressure. From turning heads with his earliest Rinse FM aired dubstep productions, to his current work with some of the scene’s leading labels and artists, Alex has never stood still; raising the sonic bar with each release, exploring new tempos, building resoundingly fresh sounds ranging from taut halfstep dread minimalism to pulsing low-end heavy techno and the hybridised technoid variants in-between.

With numerous releases of irrepressibly dark, nuerofunk-flecked firepower out on Chestplate and Osiris Music, he is an integral part of both seminal imprints and is heavily backed by the legendary DJ Distance and Kryptic Minds, including the first 12” of an on-going collaborative project dropping recently with the Osiris owners. Further work has featured on J:Kenzo’s excellent Artikal Music, as well as reaching large audiences on Get Darker, Tempa and Ministry of Sound compilations and through BBC 1xtra airtime. You can feel the signature Sleeper sound live and direct, anchoring the sets of big guns Mala, Youngsta, Icicle, Goth-Trad, True Tiger, VIVEK and Joe Nice, and through his own busy DJ schedule at events as far afield as Helsinki, Berlin, Istanbul, Sarajevo and Chestplate’s Fabric London residency.

More info about DISTRICT:

District has been something of a revelation in the last 18 months, a whirlwind period that has seen him develop into one of the most in demand producers within the deep Dubstep community. Having spent a couple of years carefully refining his production techniques, Dan got in touch with DJ Distance and along with his fellow Coventry producer and collaborator Sleeper, they quickly saw their thunderous sub-heavy rollers regularly included in Chestplate label head’s live and radio sets.

Harnessing the relentless club-shaking low frequencies, twisted reece bassline architecture and explosive energy of his signature sound, District has seen his profile grow at a staggering rate with guest appearances on the world famous Rinse.FM, GetDarker and MistaJam’s 1xtra broadcast, and his tracks finding their way into every major DJ’s record bag from the irrepressible DJ Youngsta, to scene legends Skream and Benga on their Radio 1 show.

His debut 12” in 2011 featured two premium examples of District’s talent on the buttons, Haymaker and 3.5 grams, and was released by Distance on his mighty Chestplate Records imprint, to be followed up in early 2012 with the widely acclaimed bass savagery of the Terraformed EP with Sleeper. Both records are vital additions to a seminal back catalogue bristling with classics, and have fuelled excitement for future instalments of Dan’s dark creative vision.

Evolution and progression are the hallmarks of any leading producer, and something District takes seriously as he continues to contort his menacing nuerofunk influenced track aesthetics over varying styles and rhythmical structures. His bookings have increased exponentially, with a busy DJ schedule delivering sets packed with exclusives at events and festivals all over Europe, and it looks to be another dominant year for District and the Chestplate collective.

More info about FLIGHT:

Worldwide club DJ; resident of Metalheadz, Genre and Neighbourhood. Former BBC Radio 1Xtra presenter, currently broadcasting ‘The Next Chapter’ radio show every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month on Rinse FM, 01.00-03.00 (BST).

DJ Flight’s love affair with music spans her entire life. Growing up on a varied diet of Pop, Reggae, Hip Hop, Soul and more, her arrival at secondary school witnessed the beginning of a strong relationship with the burgeoning Acid House scene of the late 80’s and early 90’s. With an education owing much to pirate radio, she witnessed the rave genre’s evolution from Acid House through to Hardcore and Jungle, making her first tentative steps into the club environment at the tender age of 14. By the time she arrived at college Flight was a regular face at a variety of seminal nights including Desire, AWOL and Innovation; it was at the latter of these that she would experience her first DJing inspiration, the sight of Kemistry and Storm on the decks. Stirred by the selection and individuality for which the pair would become famed, Flight’s journey took her to the legendary Metalheadz Sunday Session, a decision that in time would prove shrewd beyond her wildest dreams.

Over time, Flight found herself increasingly fascinated with the ways the music was delivered to the crowds and inevitably made her first vinyl purchase in the summer of 1996. 1997 saw the start of some concentrated mixing practice, together with a now dangerous wax addiction and desperation to keep pace with an ever-accelerating scene. Her deepened involvement saw her offered a job at Battersea (South London) record shop Trix Trax, and it was around this time that Flight’s first mix tapes found themselves in the hands of her peers. The very first of which was given to Storm & Kemistry…

Flight pinpoints her first real ‘big break’ down to one fateful night in 1999 at midweek night Swerve, when learning of Kemistry and Storm’s intentions to bring another girl to the camp. The mix she provided eventually found its way into the hands of Goldie, in turn awarding it the ultimate endorsement and welcoming her to the mighty Metalheadz roster; a residency at the Dingwalls Sunday Session soon followed. Before long Flight would strike gold again after handing in a couple of tapes to Sarah Sandy at Groove Connection with the aim of bagging a set or two at Swerve itself. A residency beginning in January 2000 gave her the platform to play alongside another of her greatest inspirations and all time favourites, Liquid Funk maestro Fabio.

With residencies at two of the most prestigious events in Drum & Bass on her C.V Flight soared with a number of international bookings next on the agenda, bringing her selection to the likes of Austria, Finland, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Poland, Russia, Switzerland and many more European countries; also across the U.S.A, Canada and Japan. On the domestic front she found herself in demand at major promotions including Creamfields, Locus, Movement, Bulletproof, Hospitality, Repercussion, TOV, Warning, Bassbin and Valve, together with residential slots at the Prototype and Kaos events at Fabric and at Space Breakz in Frankfurt, Germany. Top level endorsement of her DJ skills have materialised elsewhere over the years from scene architects Reinforced and renowned purveyors of smooth grooves Defunked, in respective requests to mix their ‘Enforcers: Battle Of The Breakz’ and ‘Mind, Body & Soul’ compilations. These projects cemented Flight’s reputation as a streamlined, smooth mixer and embodied the regard in which she had come to be held.

The advent of DAB Digital Radio brought about the next major break for Flight in 2002, when asked to submit a demo for new BBC station 1Xtra… After impressing executives over a three month trial period weekly show ‘The Next Chapter’ became her own, allowing Flight to push her own brand of fresh, deeper shades of Drum & Bass to an audience spanning the whole of the UK and beyond. The show welcomed household names varying from Dillinja and Intalex, to Calibre and High Contrast, while devoting invaluable airtime to newer people like Martyn, Visionary, Amit and the Future Sound Of Cambridge collective. A firm believer of nurturing fresh talent, she also debuted many up and coming producers’ tracks on the show, while devoting thirty minutes of airtime a month to an up and coming DJ in her Breaking New Talent competition feature. With Drum & Bass now well represented on 1Xtra the station took a step up in 2004, extending the previous year’s XtraBass weekend festival into a week long event that saw Flight and her fellow station DJs tour the UK celebrating all that is good about their music. The project reached a climax in 2007 with the inaugural XtraBass awards, a hugely successful London-based ceremony co-presented by Flight, L Double & Bailey and attended by the drum glitterati in their droves. However, this driving new vision was soon to reach a tragic and untimely end later in the year after boardroom changes at the BBC slashed programming for D&B and several other niche urban genres, in turn witnessing the departure of Flight and a number of other DJs from the station despite wide-ranging public protest.

In the spring of 2004 Flight had felt it was time to progress further and began the search for fresh impetus, venturing into the studio accompanied by the engineering talents of Breakage. Producing under the pseudonym ‘Alias’ this collaboration of creative minds proved to be an instant winner, label bosses Doc Scott and Kasra snapping up the first two efforts for their 31 and Critical imprints respectively. Enthused by these tracks’ reception, Alias made increasingly frequent returns to the studio resulting in signings to Critical, Bassbin and Scientific Wax.

Her one remaining vision in the mission to deliver her sound worldwide manifested itself in the formation of Play:Musik, a record label set up in 2005. With a simple but pronounced ethos of putting out quality music, the first three releases covered a wide range of influences from Detroit Techno, bass heavy dancefloor and Reggae/Electro vibes, in turn bringing through up and coming artists Martyn, Heist and Visionary. Later 12”s saw Martyn return with a second, Survival bringing the modern classics “Gravity Borne” and “Stasis”; and after a somewhat unintentional break, producers of the ‘newer skool’ Beta 2, Mosus & S.P.Y and Proxima were drafted in to continue where proceedings left off in 2007, providing quality deep beats for the label’s relaunch in Summer 2010.

Outside of her chosen poison, she is still very much into Deep House, Soulful Techno, Dubstep, Disco and more, which over recent years have seen Flight booked for an increasing number of sets under the ‘More Styles’ moniker; spreading her wings accordingly at Sardinia’s Sun & Bass festival and the renowned European Jazz Expo; BarGuru in Athens, while club level appearances have maintained the brand at D&B events Metalheadz, Grace, Feline and Shogun Audio, aswell as additional residencies being added at In Session, the London branch of Club Autonomic, Genre and Neighbourhood.

Re-joining a highly impressive roster of underground dance music pioneers in Autumn 2009, Flight is currently found broadcasting the latest incarnation of ‘The Next Chapter’ on London’s biggest and most forward-thinking radio station, Rinse. Having been awarded an FM license and now approaching their 19th year the brand continues to grow into a world-dominating force, seeing Flight broadcast bi-weekly, alternating with long-time friend and sparring partner, Stamina MC, previously being on a monthly rotation alongside dBridge and the Shogun Audio & Digital Soundboy crews. Tune in every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 1AM (UK) to hear Flight in action…

As you might have guessed, we are a fan of Bassliebe, and we are more than pleased to have Bukes Finezt to send us this Dubstep mix once again!

Bukez Finezt aka Germanys Next Topwobble is one of Germany’s best kept secrets. He began his journey into music in 1997 from Rap, Big Beat, Breakbeat, and moved into Drum and Bass. Since 2006 his involvement into Dubstep has made him to now he is known for all over the globe. His productions are supported from many big names in the scene such as Hatcha (Kiss.fm), Jakes (HENCH), Joe Nice (Dubwars NY), Cookie Monsta (Circus Records), Sukh Knight, Lost, Eddie K, Crissy Criss (Radio 1Xtra) and many more.

REVIEW // Sónar Barcelona’s 20th International Festival of Advanced Music and New Media Art

This year, Kongkretebass was honored to take part in the media coverage for Sónar Barcelona 20th anniversary, and we can truly say, they celebrated in STYLE!  The amazing diverse range of music from the Sonar by Day, into the Sonar by night was really something each music lover has to experience once in their life time!

From the Pet Shop Boys, to Bat For Lashes to Sherwood and Pinch, to one of our new favorite Trap DJs РMel̩, the diversity in the few days were something that most festival have hit and missed, yet Sonar brought together music lovers from around to word and showcased the past heavy hitters, to the recent up-and-coming names.

Our Sonar experience started on the Thursday, where we ventured mostly into the Sonar+D, Market Lab and the Hands on Area, where people are encouraged to interact with multimedia designers,  new and exciting products.

Coupe of stand outs for us was the Glassworks: Cubpix , which is an interactive cube where multiple users can  interact with these cubes which can react to users in  usage.

We were not sure how we could use it in a every day bases, but needless to say, we had a lot of fun playing with it at the display stand.

Another one of our favorite at the Market Lab was the L8 Smartlight.  This small light box is capable of linking to your mobile device, where it can display any email received, messages from Facebook, Twitter etc.

The L8 Smarlight is also capable of auto dimming if the surrounding light to bright than it, Noise Sensor, Motion Sensor etc.

Having being told that they have already sold over 3500 units, expect to see this little L8 to hit stores soon, with plenty of users from young to old be fascinated by it’s incredible functionality.

Now… On to the Parties.

Sonar by Day which runs from early afternoon until 10pm, act by names like Mykki Blanco, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Rob da Bank, James Lidell, but the two that really impressed us on the Friday was Sherwood and Pinch. To our surprise, the crowd was a bit thin to start with, as they were the last set of the Sonar by day in the Sonar Hall. But musically, it was nothing we have heard in a long time, the true boundary breaking dub vibes with the signature Sherwood and Pinch’s individual vibes rolled into one hour of Live set.
We were right down the front of stage, and to our left, there was none other than Ms. Mary Ann Hobbs head nodding and bouncing along side the crowd.

Sonar by night has to be the highlight for a lot of people,  as most of the big acts perform in the new venue of Fira Gran Via L’Hospitalet.
The venue is y far one of the biggest indoor venues we’ve been to. From the main stage Sonar Club, where Bauuer and Kraftwerk 3D was, going into Sonar Lab, to Sonar Car, and lastly, into Sonar Pub, where I personally think, was where the action was!
Bat For Lashes wasa very welcomed surprised. Her performance was inspiring and very up lifting, a true class act. But my personal highlight of Sonar has to be Jurassic 5‘s come back show!

From the get go, they started with a bang. Playing all of their classics from Concrete Schoolyard, What’s Golden, to Quality Control, all the best of the best, and the crowd was NOT disappointed! Was really an hour of power, and was really was great seeing the band get back together after so many years away.

All in all, Sonar 20th Anniversary left us wanting more! And what a location to host  it! The beautiful city of Barcelona, over the 4 days, played a true host to the 120,000+ Sonar parties goers (as well as their regular tourist of course). We could not say how delighted we were to be partying in such a beautiful city.

Thank you Sonar, you have left a mark, we will be back! And for all those who are thinking about travelling to Barcelona in the near future, make sure you put Sonar on the “must-do” list!

New Dubstep mix: Kongkast # 195 – feat. The Next (Wob Wob / Hamburg, Germany)

This week, we have a guest mix by a producer we met here in Dresden. From a city called Hamburg only few hundred kilometers away, we bring you The Next (Wob Wob / Hamburg, Germany).

TH3 NEXT grew up in East Germany, where he was heavily influenced by Hip Hop and it’s culture. Since then, his passion continued to be DJing, and after a spectacular escape from the GDR it was finally time for two turntables.

In 2000, he started to produce his own beats with an MPC2000XL, with a computer running other software completing his setup. He performed alongside various artists such as Rasco, Alies, Antipop, Consortium and Motion Man as well as supporting his friend DJ Fu (founder of the DRUMBULE Hamburg).

Heavily influenced by the emerging Dubstep and Grime scene, they, along with MC Mindfuck, decided to introduce this relatively unknown genre of music known as DUBSTEP to the people of Hamburg.

NXT LVL was then born and took place once a month at the ASTRASTUBE and a year later, they started another regular Dubstep event, called “WOBWOB!”. Together with Deneh, Yann Ignition and The Vinylizer, they have played host to many international guests including N-TYPE, TES LA ROK, SKREAM, HEADHUNTER and LUKE ENVOY.

Many thanks to THE NEXT for this Kongkast!

More info about The Next:
TH3 NEXT: Whilst growing up in East Germany, he was infected with Hip Hop after watching the movie “Beat Street”. His passion continued to be DJing, and after a spectacular escape from the GDR it was finally time for two turntables.

In 2000, 10 years after starting out, he started to produce his own beats with an MPC2000XL, with a computer running other software completing his setup. He performed alongside various artists such as Rasco, Alies, Antipop, Consortium and Motion Man as well as supporting his friend DJ Fu (founder of the DRUMBULE Hamburg) with some slick scratches during DnB sets. It was at the DRUMBULE where he got to know JNS (Phokus) who, at that time, still produced Drum & Bass.
