New DnB mix: Kongkast # 210 – feat. WAYZ (STEAM Recordings / Hong Kong / UK)

Kongkast is back this week with one of our new connections in Hong Kong – WAYZ (STEAM Recordings / Hong Kong / UK). With his recent relocation to one of Asia’s finest cities, Wayz has been tearing up the dance with his signature STEAM Records sounds, and we were lucky enough to have supported him while we were back in Hong Kong earlier this year.

Having been featured on Drum and bass Arena’s podcast which caught the attention of Breakbeat Kao’s DJ Fresh, Wayz is responsible for heavy releases such as “Beyond” on Dogs on Acid, as well as summer anthem “Music in My Mind” with MC Darrison, which came out on Planet Funk in 2009. His tracks have also been featured on; Knowledge Magazine, 1xtra, Radio 1 and now has play support from some of the scene top DJ’s, which include DJ Fresh, Adam F, Annie Mac, Mace, and Nerm.

Many Many thanks to WAYZ for this heavy heavy mix!

About WAYZ:

Wayz was first introduced to the Drum & Bass scene from the early Jungle days. Initially a keen RnB / Hip Hop listener he strived for a more energetic and progressive style of music. Keen to progress with the music Wayz developed an interest for mixing from hearing the likes of Kool FM & Rude FM and was shown the ropes from a close friend. His mixing talent developed and was later afore mentioned on Mixmag magazine during a talent showcase on Kool FM.
From that point Wayz played at various venues across London, Playing both RnB / Hop Hop and D&B gigs, Camden Palace, SW1, Leisure Lounge and The End to name but a few.

Taking time out to study Digital Arts at University, Wayz began to develop projects that involved strong reference to D&B, from this point music production was inevitable.
Since then Wayz has concentrated on production and continued to develop a fast paced dance floor orientated style. Always striving for progression and quality and looking to be part of and contributing to the scene’s ever changing sounds.

Wayz has been featured on Drum and bass Arena’s podcast which caught the attention of Breakbeat Kao’s DJ Fresh, in turn leading to the subsequent signing of “Beyond” to the high profile Dogs on Acid label. He has had various tracks signed with Dubstep madman High Rankin’s Molten Vinyl label, and Planet Funk where he collaborated with MC Darrison on the summer anthem “Music in My Mind”.
His tracks have also been featured on; Knowledge Magazine, 1xtra, Radio 1 and now has play support from some of the scene top DJ’s, which include DJ Fresh, Adam F, Annie Mac, Mace, and Nerm.

Wayz has now set up his own label, Steam Recordings with Sidius aka Tryptich enabling them both to mold and develop their own unique artwork, sound and brand.
Steam Recordings……born out of the shared desire of Wayz & Sidius to bring something new to the dancefloors of the world. A style to incorporate the energy and hooks of dancefloor Drum & Bass with the relentless, rolling tear out sound of techstep

New TEKLIFE / Jungle mix: Kongkast # 209 – feat. TASO (Hyperdub, Muti Music / SF, USA)

We’re back this week with a very special guest – TASO (Hyperdub, Muti Music / SF, USA).
As part of the TEKLIFE crew, TASO has made quite a name for himself recently. Having massive DJ support coming from some of the biggest names in the industry, along with chart topping, highly coveted tunes on the internet, this is definitely an artist to pay very close attention to.

We discovered some of his music through his Facebook page: TASO – “Greatest” Hits 2013 [Free Download], which at least I can say, is one of the best albums available for free download anywhere to be found. The heavy track listing includes collaboration with DJ Rashad, DJ Spinn, DJ Eral, and many others. We highly recommend if you haven’t heard it yet, go download it for free from his Facebook page.

In the recent months, TASO have had a string of high profile releases, including a Dubstep EP ” LB4$” on Muti Music, and the most recent collaborations with DJ Rashad on his new album “Double Cup” which is out on HyperDub.

You can check out more of his Music from his SoundCloud site, which currently includes a brand new Jungle/ Jazz / Bass Fusion track called  TASO – SaxXx [Free Download],

We hope our listeners will enjoy this mix as much as we did! Don’t forget to check out TASO’s pages for more info. (Links below)

About TASO:

Taso has made quite a name for himself recently. Having massive DJ support coming from some of the biggest names in the industry, along with chart topping, highly coveted tunes on the internet, this is definitely an artist to pay very close attention to. There is jazz buried between the crevasses of Taso’s music, and his work resounds with a feeling of distinct street beat crossed with the substance of technical virtuosity. His sounds are trunk-busting, slow rhyme inducing, pop-and-lock, deep, West Coast breaks. In a flash, Taso’s use of synths, samples and drums proves razor sharp as any contender in the big bass alleyway of top ten lists across the EDM globe. You will always find the crowd shouting and singing to Taso’s beats at his shows, while he raps on the mic and cuts it up on the 1s and 2s with proper precision. In 2012, Taso was asked to join and represent Teklife and is the only member representing this notorious crew on the West Coast. With all that being said, this is one boss young gun to be on the lookout for.

About DJ Fu:

DJ FU is one of the few drum and bass DJ’s, if not the only drum and bass DJ, of recent times that has managed to be recognised purely for his talent on the decks. Having started his DJ career as a hip-hop DJ, FU gained recognition on Oxfords hip-hop circuit, playing mid-nineties and UK hip-hop. Not happy with the direction he felt hip-hop was taking, and often finding himself as a Friday night request DJ, FU turned to playing drum and bass. This was inspired by DJ’s like Marky and Andy C that he was seeing at local club night – Source.

Not long after taking his hand to drum and bass, Fu was releasing his mixes with friend Amnesia on websites like www.dogsonacid.com. Quickly gaining recognition on the internet, Fu was offered to play a set in Austria, ironically before he was ever offered a set in Oxford playing drum and bass. This recognition also meant he would be voted in by members of the forum to represent dogsonacid’s DJ team in the first ever forum clash against Drum and Bass Arena. His recognition and hype on the internet is still growing; with YouTube videos he has featured in reaching over 300,000 views, as well as his mixes being found on forums and websites worldwide.

After winning a DJ competition for Source, Fu had become a resident at Oxford’s most prestigious drum and bass night, following in the footsteps of Total Science, Baron and DJ Lee who have all held residencies there. Having been given the opportunity to support London Elektricity, Fu’s career had a sudden twist. Having been watched by the Jungle Drummer as he packed his kit away he was approached to join him on his drummer vs. DJ project. Jungle quickly took Fu under his wing further nurturing his talent not just as a DJ but as the performer he has become today.

Jungle and Fu have been widely recognised as the most successful drum DJ combo in the world, having toured the USA and Europe, as well as playing prime time slots at Global Gathering after Andy C, Glastonbury, Warehouse Project, Gatecrasher and many more.

Fu has also been recognised outside of drum and bass having been Rodney P’s tour DJ when Skitz has not been available. He has also worked in Barry Ashworth’s Dub Pistols as a scratch DJ further pushing Fu’s role as performer within live projects. Fu’s scratching has also featured on 1xtra award winning album – Now More Than Ever by Logistics (Hospital Records). He has worked with MCs such as Stamina MC, Deeizm, Harry Shotta, IC3, Eksman, Trip and Lowqui. Fu has also worked with beat boxers such as Beardy Man at the legendary Battle Jam.

As well as all this, Fu can be seen playing at nights like Marky and Friends, Ape, One Nation, and Random Concept; and has also played in world class venues such a Ministry of Sound and The End.

New Bass Music mix: Kongkast # 207 – feat. Panda Lassow (ANUS Recordings / Rotterdam)

Today’s guest mix is not our usual dubstep or drum & bass-flavour, but bass heavy non-the-less! It comes from the lovely Panda Lassow, a German lass who relocated to Rotterdam, Netherlands, about 4 years ago.

As a Dj, producer & live beat maker, Panda Lassow draws inspiration from various genres like Bass, Jungle, Dub, Experimental Hip Hop Beats, Future Funk, Psychedelic and many more, which usually makes it hard to give her choice of selection and productions a one-word-description. We remember her from the recent Laptop-Battle Dresden, where she made it to the podium as 2nd runner-up, with an incredibly fun & futuristic track.

Staying true to her love for vinyl records, she not only recorded this Podcast the old-fashioned way, but also runs her own vinyl-only label ANUS Records, where she has been able to publish some of her own work, with more in the pipeline. Big up!

Check it out and enjoy the mix!

More about Panda Lassow :

Rotterdam-based and vinyl-only DJ and producer Panda Lassow aka Petra Lundawerk generally plays all types of Bass music.
As her experimental electronic music alter ego Petra Lundawerk she started DJing in 2004 while studying in Dresden, Germany. Influenced by Dresden-based musicians like Kern, Mr. Incognito and Credit 00, she started making music herself in 2008. From 2010 till 2012 she was publishing her own podcast called Wunschkonzert IEM Podcast. Some co-workings with Frankfurt/Main based producer Suspicion Breeds Confidence, Berlin-based producer and artist Grischa Lichtenberger and London-based artist Italia Rossi followed.
The Dub and Drum’n’Bass-scene of Dresden never lost attraction. Influenced by that, but always forward-looking, she explored herself in different genres like Bass, Jungle, Dub, Experimental Hip Hop Beats, Future Funk, Psychedelic and many more.
New influences came with moving to Rotterdam, Netherlands, in 2009. Since 2012 she owns her own vinyl-only label named ANUS Records with recently having two releases – her own first EP and one from Australian-based producer Tuff Sherm aka Dro Carey. As part of The Beatmakers Union (TBMU) in Rotterdam she takes part live-beatmaking sessions and is connected to local beatmakers – new co-workings and releases coming soon tho.

More info about BRAD PITCH :

Brad Pitch is a producer and DJ from Dresden, Germany. While growing up in the 80s, Brad Pitch is heavily influenced by Hip Hop culture, inspired by the movie “Beat Street”. With his first set of Technics, and the guidance of DJ “Studio 17″, he started out spinning hip hop beats in the mid 90s. A few years, Brad Pitch ventured into producing first own tracks on a Tascam-multi-track recorder. Much later in 2005, he continued experimenting with hip hop beats and mash-ups, until he discovered Dubstep, UK Garage, Trap and Juke.
Since then, he has had a number of house and bass releases on digital label “Moose Records” based in Dresden. And in the second half of 2013, saw a Footwork / Juke collaboration release with studio partner “Wash” called “Brooklyn Ride EP” on American electronica label “Muti Music”.
His venture into bass music also gave Brad Pitch an opportunity in starting a night called “Trap the System” which concentrates heavily on Trap and new Bass music.

This week, we are thrilled to be presenting to our listeners one of our long time favorite producers from early 2000 - Young Ax (Sugaphonic Records, Santorin, Critical / Germany)

More info about YOUNG AX :

Born and raised in Berlin’s beautiful “green district” Koepenick, he first fell in love with music when he saw the movie “Beat Street”.

He started playing/mixing records with tape decks & old turntables and became a passionate breakdancer. His Hip-Hop mixtapes even got him to play on the local East-German radio and after the wall came down he finally was able to get hold of some technics and lots of vinyl … He began spinning at parties and played with a Hip-Hop crew called “No Solo”.

In the early 90’s Jungle came from London to Berlin and Alex was absolutely hooked by the phat bass and rolling beats of the sound that got played by the likes of Kemistry & Storm at locations like the legendary “Toaster”. It inspired him a lot and he wanted to create his personal version of this exciting music. He got himself some used analog equipment and started finding his own Funk, Jazz and Hip-Hop influenced style.

More info about D.A :

D.A (Daniel Clarke aka Urban Enigma) is an international musician, producer, and industry entrepreneur. Born in White Plains, NY, but emigrated to South East London as a small child. His formative years in the UK involved listening to and DJ’ing on London’s pirate radio airwaves and deeply immersing himself in the Rave, Hardcore and Breakbeat music scenes of the era.

D.A cut his teeth as a teenage bedroom producer. By day he produced TV commercial/advertising jingles for famous British brands, and by night was relying on his gregarious nature to talk his way into legendary venues such as the Ministry of Sound, Hippodrome (nights run by DJ Chris Paul), Astoria and Equinox, rubbing shoulders with what some would now regard as many of the ‘founding fathers’ of the Breakbeat, Jungle, and later Drum & Bass scenes. Seeing this new musical experience unravel and develop right before his eyes, D.A immediately fell in love, and pledged a vow to become deeply involved as a facilitator and influencer in underground music.

Between 1995 and 1999 D.A locked himself in his studio for a 4 year stint while also completing his Audio Engineering degree at the flagship SAE Music Institute in London. His first dabble with music management was setting up the ‘Dire Productions’ – a record label which later became NexGen Music. During this self-imposed Ê»lock-inʼ period, D.A explored and experimented with producing and discovering new music styles. A pivotal moment during his retreat was the discovery of a CD compilation in a 1998 issue of DJ Mag. The compilation contained quality tracks by top artists in the Downtempo, Chill and Deep House genres. Labels represented on the CD included Chez, Naked Music and Nu Wave Music. These new influences expanded D.Aʼs nascent musical horizons, inspiring him to expand into genres including like Downtempo, Chill-out, Nu / Future Jazz, Deep House, Tech House, Electro, and later Dubstep.

In 2001 D.A rebranded the label as ‘NexGen Music’ with a threefold mission – to showcase the depth and diversity of the electronic music genre and sub-genres; to counteract the barriers-to-entry D.A had personally experienced with other record labels as an aspiring producer; and to provide a community for experimentation and collaboration between new and established talent.

This approach soon had NexGen representing leading industry producers and DJs like: DJ Chris Paul, creator and promoter of Orange Raves, one of the UKʼs biggest Jungle/Rave organizations, and the producer of ʻTomʼs Dinerʼ by Suzanne Vega, as a member of the band DNA which hit #1 on the singles charts in 3 countries, #2 on the UK Singles charts, and #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Other legends NexGen represents include Earth Leakage Trip ʻELTʼ (Neil Sanford & Tony Lobue), one of the original pioneers of Hardcore and Techno with their inaugural release of the ʻPsychotronic EPʼ on the award-winning Moving Shadow record label back in 1991. ELT have also made appearances on Rising High Records and Orbitalʼs ʻBack To Mineʼ Collection.

In 2003 D.A moved the label across the Atlantic spending several years in Brooklyn, NY, prior to relocating to Washington, DC. With an expanding catalogue of musicians and artists, D.A successfully secured a number of placements for NexGen music across film, TV and the interactive entertainment industries. Clients include the BBC, Lionsgate Films, OTC Films, and major TV shows including Top Chef.

D.A has become an active figure within the Washington, DC nightlife scene, in-demand as both an industry spokesman, DJ and producer. He has appeared as a panelist at various industry conferences, and has forged partnerships with nationally recognized DC music brands like the 930 Club, U Street Music Hall. D.A is also a regularly sought after entertainment DJ current signed to the renowned Andy Kushner Entertainment, and Everything Entertainment corporate and special event agencies. He also co-organizes the rapidly growing DC Electronic Dance Meet- Up Group. The group has a network of over 1,500 members and is at the nexus of DCʼs vibrant electronic dance music community in Washington, DC. The groupʼs inclusive, “no ego” philosophy provides fertile ground for the areaʼs ever-expanding dance music scene.

D.Aʼs entrepreneurial ambitions grow day by day, however, each success reminds him to redouble his commitment to creating a local and international family of NexGen musicians, artists, and producers.
