New Drum & Bass mix: Kongkast # 239 – feat. DIGITAL (Ingredients Records, Metalheadz, Function / UK)

*** Bookings info ***
We have just been told that DIGITAL is currently based in Thailand! For our promoter friends in Asia and around, this is your chance to pick up Digital while he’s in the area. Please get in touch with http://bassic.co/ or Digital on facebook for more information.

Stephen Carr a.k.a. Digital is one of the UK’s well-respected & inspirational drum and bass producers with a career spanning 18yrs and a seminal catalogue of original & innovative releases to date.

His signature bass-lines & radicalized dubbed out sounds reach back to his childhood seeing his Father run his own sound-system for nearly thirty years in Ipswich, UK. The moniker ‘Digital’ was given to Steve by the Ashanti Sound system immediately recognizing his technical ability operating a sound system at the age of 14 also relating the moniker to the future, his youth and the emergence of the digital age & technology. It wasn’t long before Digital had a sound-system of his own in 1991, with the ‘rave scene’ growing in & around Ipswich he started to hire-out his system to various promoters. This is when he really got interested in the rave scene and its music triggering his curiosity that drew his attention to production…

Digital’s 18yrs of production consist of 4LP’s & countless 12” & EP’s on his own label imprint; Function records & co-owned imprint Phantom Audio as well as some of the finest Drum n Bass labels to date; Metalheadz, Exit, Timeless, 31 Records, C.I.A, Photek Productions, Innerground, Commercial Suicide, Reinforced Records, Violence, Chronic & Hardleaders the list goes on! His debut release ‘Touch Me’ on Timeless in 1995 was followed up by a 12” ‘Niagra/Down Under’ on Metalheadz 1995. But it was his third release that really set the marker for Digital ‘Spacefunk’ a limited edition 12” on Timeless Recordings 1995. Such a unique track in its time and so well received it got re-released with remixes from Goldie, Photek & Doc Scott. Followed up by a 12” for Photek Productions in 1997 ‘Lower Depths/SubZero’.

1998 saw the birth of the infamous Phantom Audio imprint co-owned with producer & friend Spirit It arose from their mutual desire to have their own base where there was no set musical agenda. Soon after the duo debuted with the release of ‘Phantom Force’ this track became a d’n’b anthem worldwide. Still to this day 14yrs after its release you can still ‘Phantom Force’ being featured in sets from the likes of; Andy C, Friction, Goldie & DJ Marky also getting licensed to numerous Dance Music CD compilations. The imprint Phantom Audio went on to home some formative releases from the duo alongside a selection of solo cuts. March 2013 sees the duo teaming up once again for the first time in 10yrs to re-launch the label.

Looking back through Digital’s discography he has had so many cuts that still stand the test of time from the mighty ‘Deadline’ on 31 records to the monster ‘Waterhouse Dub’ on Function and ‘Gateman’ on Phantom Audio. 2002 saw the release of his debut LP ‘Dubzilla’ on Function 10 tracks of pure D’n’B; 8 tracks in his own true imitable dub-fashion + 2 tracks from with Phantom Audio label partner Spirit. Whilst he continued to release music in mid April 2002 Digital teamed with his long-time friend and business partner Brillo in setting up the Timeless Music Group handling all forms of label management for 12 independent D&B labels. Helping to A&R and support artists like Amit, Dylan, Outrage, Tactile, Chris SU also collaborating with Total Science on various projects. Digital also worked closely with 2 of New Zealand’s biggest electronic acts Salmonella Dub & Concord Dawn helping both acts to develop their European market further with tour management, tour support, European distribution & marketing. In addition to DJ’ing throughout the UK, Europe, Japan, New Zealand & USA

New DRUM & BASS mix: Kongkast # 237 – feat. THE INVADERZ (Metalheadz, CIA, Commercial Suicide / UK)

Since the year 2000, the London based trio The Invaderz have featured on many of Drum & Bass’ biggest and most renowned labels. The Invaderz consists of cousins Matt Lord and Leo Grant, alongside long time friend Darrell James. Darrell met Matt whilst working in the record distribution industry and was soon after introduced to Leo, and this is when the Invaderz in its final incarnation was formed. The breakthrough event came when they won a competition to feature on Grooveriders legendary Radio 1 show as unsigned artists. Within weeks of their music being played on the show they were signed to CIA and Metalheadz. Known for their hard breaks, big bass, layered strings and versatility there isn’t a style of Drum n Bass the guys haven’t explored. The testament to this is the wide and varied list of top labels their productions have graced. Metalheadz, Liquid V, SoulR, Horizons and Commercial Suicide to name just a few.
As well as writing Drum n Bass Matt has been a founder member of Bugz in The Attic, the broken beat pioneers, and worked on projects with the likes of Dego and Kaidi Tatham as well as composing commercials for top multinationals such as Cadburys, Barclays, Gillette and Nokia to name but a few of his clients.
Darrell has worked in various aspects of the music industry, working occasionally in record stores, working in record distribution at Jumpstart and playing on various pirate radio stations across London. His first full release was in 1996 on his friend Ray Keiths label Penny Black, under the moniker “Uncharted Territory” a track that was engineered by Daz I Kue, also of Bugz fame.
Leo (Dr Leo Grant!) earned his PhD in classical composition studying with Michael Finnissy at Southampton University where he is a teaching fellow, he is currently teaching music technology to children in East London, whilst also doing freelance commercial work composing, arranging and typesetting for TV, film and commercials. With their long overdue debut album about to be set free into the world The Invaderz are ready to get back amongst it !

New Footwork mix: Kongkast # 235 – feat. BANZULU (None60, SUB:CULTURE / Tallahassee, United States)

Forming together like a two-man Voltron, Banzulu is the project of Florida-based DJs/Producers Abe Vazquez and Caleb Selman. As founding members of the SUB:CULTURE collective, they have been pushing bass-heavy sounds in their home state for several years, and have been instrumental in advancing the footwork sound there. First surfacing on Phyla Digital’s “Jack to Juke” Compilation earlier this year, Banzulu are just now beginning to make moves in the scene. Their sound is heavily influenced by the growing footwork movement, but they also draw from UK bass music sounds (including Grime, Garage and Jungle), as well as regional influences such as Southern Hip Hop, Chopped and Screwed, etc.

Many thanks to BANZULU for this exclusive mix for Kongkretebass Kongkast!

New Various mix: Kongkast # 233 – feat. FADED GHOST aka ChaCha (SVBKVLT, Hyperdub, Jahtari / Shanghai, China)

We’ve been very excited since we received this mix a few weeks ago. In our opinion, the producer/DJ/Vocalist is definitely one of the most talented people in the Music scene within China and Asia, we have an exclusive mix by Faded Ghost aka ChaCha (SVBKVLT, Hyperdub, Jahtari / Shanghai, China).

Having met up with ChaCha and Drunk Monk in Shanghai earlier this year, and witnessing one of the best experimental sets in Shanghai by Faded Ghost, we are honored to have her onboard for KONGKAST on this solo mix.

A broad and exciting project, Faded Ghost has no set rules or style, often resulting in unpredictable and surprising results.

As a producer and live performer, she creates collages of sounds using field recordings as well as self-taught production techniques using various analog and digital hardware, blending together her many influences and ideas into abstract compositions that don’t stick to the usual borders and templates of genre.

As a DJ, Faded Ghost plays selections of upfront sounds, from the new strain of hip hop and experimental dance music, to unreleased tracks from her contemporaries and musical friends she has met along her journey so far. A resident at Shanghai’s Sub-Culture night, as well as the newly formed Lost Cargo crew, Faded Ghost stays on the fringe of the quickly evolving musical landscape in China whilst staying cohesive and accessible for the dancefloor.

Many thanks to FADED GHOST / CHACHA for this exclusive mix for Kongkretebass Kongkast!

About FADED GHOST aka ChaCha:

Faded Ghost is the producer/DJ pseudonym of Shanghai based vocalist ChaCha.

About ChaCha
Over the last 6 or 7 years, ChaCha has quickly become one of the most exciting and celebrated independent artists to come out of China. A vocalist and musician since a very young age, ChaCha has managed to break out of the usually quite sheltered music scene in her hometown of ZunYi, GuiZhou and has made musical waves around the world.

Since moving to Shanghai in 2005 and joining China’a largest bass music crew, Uprooted Sunshine/Sub-Culture, she has been exposed to a huge variety of music at her regular spot, The Shelter, and has naturally adopted these styles and genres like no other local artist. From recording with international artists such as Clive Chin, Kode9, Adrian Sherwood, Disrupt, The Bug, Rumi, Hamacide, Vibronics and Desto, to releasing music on labels such as VP/Randy’s, Hyperdub, Jahtari, 502 and Tokyo’s Black Smoker Records, she also keeps her feet firmly rooted in the local scene and works closely with Chinese artists such as Wordy Soulspeak, Webber, In3, A-Long and Chee Productions (of which she is also a member).

In 2010 ChaCha teamed up with Dutch producer Jay.Soul and formed AM444, a genre bending group that, although many seem to label it as ‘trip-hop’ or ‘downbeat’, has just as much in common with dub sounds
and ‘bass music’ as it does with some of her favorite groups and earliest influences such as Portishead and Massive Attack. The duo released their first EP, Eye Wonder, in 2011, and their first full length album
ROOMS in 2012, both on Shanghai’s PAUSE:MUSIC, and have received radio play and support from all over Asia, Europe and beyond. She was also honored by being the first ever mainland Chinese artist to be accepted into the Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid in 2011. This opened her mind and opportunities even further are saw her work together with fellow alumni such as Doc Daneeka, XXXY, Phoebe Kiddo, Nick Hook, Jessie Boykins III, Paze and more, as well as seeing her perform at several of the RBMA events. Having access to a great variety or equipment and talented advisors also lead to her starting her new
solo project and alias, ‘Faded Ghost’, a dark, droned out vocal experiment the likes of which are very different to anything coming out of the PRC.

Her talent and various projects have seen her perform all over China and Asia, including Japan, Thailand, Korea and Manila, as well as the Worldtronics festival in Berlin, Sakifo Festival on Reunion Island and club gigs in UK, Germany and Spain. Having just returned from Tokyo after making serious waves and connections in the scene there, and with a Europe tour in the works, in 2013 expect to hear a lot more from ChaCha!

New Bass Music mix: Kongkast # 231 – feat. SLV (SVBKVLT / Shanghai, China)

Downstate, a Shanghai based producer from the UK, is one half of S L V alongside Tokyo’s Hamacide. As a solo artist, Downstate makes washed out, woozy rap beats, sighting influences from Memphis to London and everywhere in between. As S L V, the pair make abstract leaning footwork rhythms, nicely combining both of their styles to create quite a unique take on the Chicago sound.

A regular at The Shelter and a member of Sub-Culture, Downstate’s DJ sets seamlessly blend both these styles of music to great effect.

‘This mix is basically the sort of set I’ve been playing at The Shelter this last year or two. starting with some wavy memphis-esque rap beats and going into footwork. I also wanted to focus on a lot of the footwork I’m into out of Canada, Japan and Europe, the stuff that’s come out post DJ Rashad / Chicago, more people need to be hearing that shit.’ – Downstate

S L V latest release, The Moss Temple EP, came out on August 4th on Shanghai’s SVBKVLT label, and includes 4 new original tracks as well as a remix by Hyperdub’s Scratcha DVA. His next solo release, entitled ‘Sewers’ will be released via SVBKVLT in October 2014.

Many thanks to SLV for this wicked mix!

And we’re back this week with one of our favorite duo in the bass music scene - Andy Hobbs and Dan Blishen aka Silent Dust. The duo has been making some serious waves in the various BPM movement such as their unique cross genre between Jungle and Juke.
Having released under the  Hobzee & Zyon Base alias for a number of years in the Drum & Bass scene, they have shifted over to the Silent Dust moniker in recent times. With this change, it gave them more freedom to break free of the fixed tempo styles of DnB, and and outcome has been fantastic.

Their label hosts a number of very talented artists such as Sinistarr, Zilla Rocca, and remixes in the form of Calibre and Intalex.
Within this Kongkast, they included couple of forthcoming releases on none6 Records, such as Sinistarr ft Brownstudy – Regrets, and Banzulu – Nobody Move.
You can check out their releases on the non60 Records bandcamp site, which also host an exclusive release “STATIC”, a collection of the duo’s production exclusive on their Bandcamp Site.

A Massive Thank You to Andy at Silent Dust for taking the time out and sending us this mix!

More info about Silent Dust

Silent Dust is not the beginning or the end of Andy Hobbs and Dan Blishen’s music. It simply represents the summation of the present.

Andy Hobbs and Dan Blishen’s history as releasing artists dates back to 2007/2008 under their original Hobzee & Zyon Base alias. Forging their careers out of the prevalent post liquid sound that earned them releases on Samurai Music, Sgn Ltd, Fokuz Recordings and Influenza Media. Garnering support from some of Drum & Bass’ most prolific DJs and tastemakers, it was under the supportive encouragement of Marcus Intalex that saw them shift towards the Silent Dust moniker.

The decisive move to a new identity facilitated the opportunity to reassess the duo’s approach to music allowing them to break away from creative restrictions of genre and expectation. An emerging self titled album project through 2010 for Marcus Intalex’s Soul:r label promised to be the pinnacle of their career, but was halted due to distribution issues. Fortunately the album survived intact with remixes from Marcus Intalex, Calibre and Om Unit to be realized through the birth of Silent Dust’s own none60 imprint.

The establishment of none60 through necessity is arguably the best thing that could have happened for the production duo, a precursor to their most creatively ambitious work to date. Their time since none60’s birth has seen them remove all limitations of genre, tempo and convention collaborating and remixing with Sinistarr, Selfsays, Zilla Rocca, Altair, Curly Castro, MC DRS, Wale and even some unofficial remixes of Lil B and Nicki Minaj.

Silent Dust are musical story tellers. From “Vostok 1” voyages to the edges of Earth’s atmosphere, the grainy orbit of “Nortvedt Effect” or the power pads of “Population Me” alongside Selfsays, Silent Dust create a narrative that includes the listener as co-traveller in their journey into beyond.
