New DnB mix: Kongkast # 181 – feat. Seba (Secret Operations, Metalheadz, Hospital / Sweden)

Yes! We are finally back from our unscheduled month away. Many apologies to those who have been missing and messaging us about our current schedule.
But not to worry, we are now back for 2012’s final month of mixes, and this week, we bring to you a Swedish producer Sebastian Ahrenberg aka Seba (Secret Operations, Metalheadz, Hospital / Sweden).

Established a reputation as one of the finest purveyors of quality drum & bass over a distinguished career stretching back over 15 years. From his early tracks on LTJ Bukem’s ground‐breaking label Good Looking Records to his recent debut LP ‘Return to Forever,’ Seba’s music has retained a timeless appeal and brings together beats and bass in classic style.
Having started the club night Secret Operations in 1997, from humble beginnings in a cellar bar named Tuben in central Stockholm, the club went on to long run of successful nights. By 1999 the club had given rise to a record label with the same name.

Many thanks to SEBA for this mix, and thank you to Example Media UK for supporting and linking us up with their roaster and artists.

New Bass Music mix: Kongkast # 176 – feat. PHON.O (50 Weapons, Monkeytown / Berlin, Germany)

This week on Kongkast, we are moving a little away from our usual flavor of Drum & Bass or Dubstep, instead, we have a very special mix by one of the headline artists whom we have had the delight of seeing perform a Live Set at the recent MELT! Festival 2012 - PHON.O (50 Weapons, Monkeytown / Berlin, Germany).

PHON.O started to play records with his mate Apparat in the early 90s. Since 1998, PHON.O started to create his own music and emerged in the spring of 2000 with his first release, on Cytrax. In 2008 the results of CLPs (Chris de Luca plus Phon.o) dirty collabo got released as the EP Ready Or Not on BoysNoize Recordings, which included remixes by Diplo and Mixhell. With the beginning of the new decade Phon.o started working on new songs and put his hands on remixes for Modeselektor, Boys Noize, Schlachthofbronx and Robot Koch.

Since 2010, PHONO.O have had consistant releases on various labels including the mighty Modeselektor’s “50 Weapons” and as well as “Monkeytown Records”, so expect plenty more from PHON.O in the future to come.
Also, do not ever snooze if you ever have a chance to see PHON.O play a Live set, his Live performance is surely something to remember.

Many thanks to PHON.O for this very unique mix on Kongkast!

Fast forward three years and Stray’s productions have been championed by such drum and bass luminaries as Goldie, Rockwell, Alix Perez, Calyx and Teebee, as well as earning him the attention of BBC 6 Music’s Gilles Peterson, resulting in the release of ‘Break your Legs’ on his Brownswood Records imprint last year.

Check out Stray’s upcoming release on Warm Communications, featuring Halogenix  The Pursuit b/w Poison is two of the most forward thinking drum & bass tracks yet to come from Stray, as well as Halogenix. (for those who might remember, Halogenix was a recent guest on Kongkast #162).

Month of Dresden Week 5: Kongkast # 173 – feat. High Finesse / Dresden, Germany

This is it, the  final edition of our “MONTH OF DRESDEN” series is here. The weather has turned quite hot in Dresden over the last few days, and from where ever you are tuning in, you might just be able to catch some of that sweaty summer vibe in this mix by local crew High Finesse.

High Finessehave come together as a big musical family just over a decade ago, and are today well-known across the region for their diverse Fusion-Jungle sound. Together they have hosted numerous events, have run their own little club (the now defunct Galerie Disko), and are currently pushing a series of genre-bending larger scale events that bring together Drum & Bass and Techno.

While High Finesse are busy looking for a new home for their family club dreams, they keep on playing the music they (and we all) love.

Now listen in and enjoy. Happy summer, everyone!

Thanks to Fabian Leuchtmann & Corn Flex for representing HIGH FINESSE on KONGKAST.

About High Finesse:
High Finesse Bass Travels is a family-style Drum & Bass and Fusion-Jungle crew from Dresden, Germany. Active members are at the moment: Fabian Leuchtmann, Corn Flex, Tomtastic, Sirius, Albreax, Sam Francesco, Luke Gooding, Singin’ Paula Herself.

The crew was founded in June 2001, organising some famous-infamous genre-crossing parties in a venue called Pentacon (no joke, only one letter saved them from becoming imperialists, back then). Since almost all members had already been friends before, at that time High Finesse was nothing more than just a name they had to come up with in order to be recognized in town. For them, organising parties was basically about combining two things they liked to do: hanging out with friends and playing any kind of good jungle music.

This all became a bit more serious by the end of 2007 when they got the chance to take over Dresden’s legendary little club „Galerie Disko“. Suddenly, they were responsible for something more that just their crew, something with more importance – not only to them but to almost the entire electronic music scene in Dresden. During great 1,5 years of running this venue they saw how easy genre borders could disappear in people’s heads when the atmosphere is right. That was an inspiring time of growth – as a crew and with other crews from bass music right up to house and techno.

Since the forced closure of Galerie Disko High Finesse, have been looking for a new music playground. Meanwhile, they continue running the weekly BASSKUSCHELN night on Thursdays at bar BON VOYAGE, where different crews and Djs get to showcase their smoother bass music delicacies. What’s more, High Finesse have initiated a series of larger events under the name of DEPROGRAMMING, where they strive to take down the walls between Techno and Drum & Bass – as it used to be in Dresden in the 90s.

Style-wise the crew draws from a big spectrum and like to play anything from fluffy sunset sessions to hypnotic, rolling and pumping joyrides. It can basically be anything going by the name Drum & Bass, Jungle or Dubstep. Stereotypical pigeonholing hurts, so they rather don’t do it.

Month of Dresden Week 4: Kongkast # 172 – feat. DNZ @ Fat Fenders Record Store / Dresden, Germany

Number four in our “MONTH OF DRESDEN” series features DNZ, a well-versed and respected DJ and also co-owner of the infamous Fat Fenders Record Store. His shop, a vital socialising hot-spot for many of the city’s bass, techno and house crews, recently found itself caught in an overwhelming wave of support after it was struck by a fire just over 2 months ago.

Since picking up his long loved hobby of DJing in 1990, DNZ has turned this hobby into a serious business in 2001, when him and good friend Fabian started running the Fat Fenders Record Store in Dresden.

Musically, DNZ draws his early influences from the (now defunct) cult Radio Station DT64 and its Hip Hop, Breakbeat and Hip House radio shows.

These days DNZ is seen sharing stages with his “Funky Monkey” and “Tropenfieber” crews, as well as a support for visiting artists such as Jamie Lidell, DaM-FunK, James Pants, Flako, Thavius Beck, Daedelus and many more.

It’s a great pleasure to have DNZ represent Fat Fenders on KONGKAST.

Hope you’ll enjoy!

More info about DNZ @ Fat Fenders:
DNZ – one of Dresden finest Dj’s.

Known for his versatile Style, whether it is Dubstep, Electronic, Hip Hop or soulful Funk, you can be sure he will knock you of your Feet!

Dennis developed his love for Music from early on, having a Dad who played in a Band and a Sister who made him Dance! She was also the one who bought him his first ever Record in 1986.

Influenced by the GDR Radio Station DT64 Dennis got hungry, especially for the Hip Hop / Breakbeat / Hip House Radio Shows. Hence, he stepped into the Dj game around 1990. What once started as a Dj at a School Disco has become a serious Vinyl Business.

Since 2001 he is running the legendary “Fat Fenders” Record Store in Dresden together with his good friend Fabian. No wonder that DNZ is always at the forefront and the first to play these hot Tunes.

Today DNZ is sharing Stages with & supports Artists such as Jamie Lidell, DaM-FunK, James Pants, Flako, Thavius Beck, Daedelus and many more. He is also a Member of the “Tropenfieber” Crew and one of those Funky Monkeys at Altes Wettburo.
